Is He Worthy?
"Then I saw in the right hand of him who was seated on the throne a scroll written within and on the back, sealed with seven seals. 2 And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming with a loud voice, "Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?" 3 And no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look into it, 4 and I began to weep loudly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look into it. 5 And one of the elders said to me, "Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals."" Revelation 5:1-5
This is the focus passage Andrew Peterson uses for his new song entitled "Is He Worthy?". This song is unique in a number of ways. First of all, we have in it a song that asks a question in which every believer knows the answer. John writes in Revelation 5, "Who is worthy to open the scrolls?" John looked over the expanse of heaven and saw no one that could answer the call. Looking over the sea of glass he must have seen Moses, the great prophet and the one that delivered Israel out of bondage and led them to the promised land. King David must have been in a prominent spot for John to notice him and yet even the mighty King that slayed tens of thousands, the man after God's own heart could not open the scrolls. Consider Isaiah or Jeremiah, the men that spoke judgement over the nations and even prophesied the coming Messiah. Perhaps they could provide assistance?
What about the great men of the New Testament? Maybe the gospel writers? Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John himself that helped us learn about the person and work of Jesus, no doubt they could be given a chance to break the seal. The greatest evangelist to every walk planet earth in the Apostle Paul. Writer of the most of the New Testament and the deliverer of the gospel to the Gentiles, would he be acceptable to the strong Angel asking for help?
The answer in every case is no. Only one is worthy. Only one has ever been worthy. Only one will ever be worthy. His name is Jesus! He is the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the root of Jesse, and He has conquered. Our great King and deliverer…Jesus. He is worthy! Having defeated sin and death, and purchasing salvation for all those that would believe, He is worthy!
This song declares the grand truth that Jesus has "ransomed people for God from every tribe language and people and nation and you have made them a kingdom and priests to our God and they shall reign on the earth." Rev. 5:9.
Secondly, it is a call and response song. Ryan and I will pose questions and you, the congregation, will answer. The answers are simple, "we do", "it is", and "He is". It helps us work our way through the gospel recognizing the current state of creation asking questions such as "Is all creation groaning?" "It is". Then we see the culmination of all things in the glorious coming of our Savior to make all thing new. We will finish with the answer to the question posed by the title of the song…"HE IS"!
We are praying that as we introduce and sing this song at every service this weekend at the World Missions Conference, it grabs your heart and brings a new resolve in your heart to spread this great news of Jesus to those around you…to the ends of the earth. He is worthy!
