No Other Fount
Welcome back! So glad to know that we have some faithful readers for the blog. Would you mind this week mentioning/forwarding this article to some friends? We would love for more people to be ready to worship with us this Sunday and be informed on the songs we are singing.
This week we are debuting a new song from Travis Cottrell's latest album called "No Other Fount". Those familiar with hymnody will recall several hymns and songs that use this metaphor of a fount, referring to the blood of Christ shed for sinful humanity.
Blood is an important theme in the Scriptures, mentioned over 300 times in the OT and more than 90 times in the NT. Something tells me we should pay attention to it. There are several ways a person can die that do not require the shedding of blood. Asphyxiation and drowning to name a few, but there are several more. So, yes death is important, but death by the shedding of blood is what is in view here. Leviticus 17:11 tells us that life in the flesh is found in the blood. So life is associated with blood in one sense, but in the OT sacrificial system the shedding of blood meant death to something to create atonement for sin. In most of the OT mentions of the word "blood" death is in view. Why is this significant for us? Let's look to the scriptures for our answers.
"Take a bunch of hyssop and dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and touch the lintel and the two doorposts with the blood that is in the basin. None of you shall go out of the door of his house until the morning. 23 For the Lord will pass through to strike the Egyptians, and when he sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, the Lord will pass over the door and will not allow the destroyer to enter your houses to strike you." Exodus 12:22-23.
"Indeed, under the law almost everything is purified with blood, and without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins." Hebrews 9:22
"Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God." Romans 5:9
"In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace," Ephesians 1:7
"But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin." 1 John 1:7
These are just a minutiae of the passages that speak of the blood of Christ cleansing us from sin. So, it is clear even from these few verses that we are cleansed from sin and offered salvation by one thing and one thing only, the shed blood of Christ on the cross. It justifies us, redeems us, cleanses us, justifies us…oh the blood of Jesus!
Only your blood has the power
There is no other, no other fount I know
Jesus Your love made a way
No other fount I know can save!
Listen to the song on the playlist this week and be ready to sing with all confidence in the blood of Jesus that can save!
